Parents ask us this all the time: is my kid old enough to lift? The short answer is that strength training is safe and really good for kids, as long as it’s well coached. The right time to start has less to do with a birthday and more to do with whether your child can listen, follow directions and learn to move well.
What the experts say
The American Academy of Pediatrics says kids and teens can benefit from strength training when it’s properly supervised, including fewer injuries and better overall fitness. It also points out that strength training is a lot more than lifting weights. Even young kids get stronger with things like hopping, jumping and body-weight moves (AAP).
Done right, it helps kids get stronger and faster, jump higher, build better coordination and feel more confident in their bodies.
Is it safe?
With good coaching, yes. Most strength-training injuries in kids happen at home or with no one watching, and they’re usually minor. The real risks are bad technique, too much weight too soon, and no supervision. That’s why who’s coaching matters a lot more than how old your kid is.
Signs your child is ready
- They can follow directions and stay focused for a short session
- They’re interested, or they play a sport that would benefit
- They’re open to coaching and fixing their form
What good youth training looks like by age
| Age | Focus |
|---|---|
| 8–11 | Body-weight strength, coordination, jumping and landing, sprinting, and games that build athleticism. Light equipment to learn good technique. |
| 12–14 | Learning the main lifts with light weight, speed and agility, injury prevention, and getting comfortable in the weight room. |
| High school | Sport-specific strength, speed and power, in-season and off-season training, and steadily adding weight with a coach watching. |
What to look for in a youth program
- Coaches who know kids and specialize in youth and athlete development
- Small groups so a coach can actually watch every rep
- Technique first, then weight
- A plan that fits their season, not one generic workout for everyone
- A fun, positive vibe that makes kids want to come back
Youth training at Stealth Performance
Our Youth Performance program coaches kids from age 8 through high school. Groups run Monday through Friday after school, mostly at 3:30 and 4:30 PM, with evening options, and high school athletes can add Saturday speed and strength sessions. We work with athletes in season and out of season, and with kids who just want to feel stronger and more confident.
Book a free session and one of our coaches will see where your child is at and build from there. We’re at 3927 E Indian School Rd in Phoenix’s Arcadia area.
