If you’re comparing gyms in Phoenix, you’ll see three common ways to train with a coach: one-on-one personal training, semi-private training with a few people, and small group classes. They can all work. The right one for you depends on your goals, your training history, any injuries, your budget, and how much accountability you need.

At Stealth Performance in Arcadia, we coach all three formats under one roof. Here’s how we help people choose.

The three formats at a glance

Personal training (1-on-1) Semi-private (2–4 people) Small group (4–8 people)
Coach attention 100% on you Shared, but every person has their own program Shared; one session plan, scaled for each person
Program Fully individual Fully individual Group plan with options for each level
Best for Injuries, specific goals, beginners who want a fast start Most adults who want a custom plan at a lower cost People who love energy, community and consistency
Cost per session Highest Middle Lowest
Accountability A coach waiting for you A coach plus a small crew The group and the coach

When personal training is the right call

One-on-one coaching is the most precise option. Every rep, every cue and every adjustment is about you. It makes the most sense when:

When semi-private training is the sweet spot

Semi-private is where many of our adult clients land long-term. You train in a session with one to three other people, but you are not doing a group workout. Each person follows their own program built around their goals, training history and injuries, and the coach rotates between you.

You get most of the personalization of private training at a lower cost per session, plus the energy of training next to other people who show up on the same days. For a lot of people, that combination of a custom plan and a small crew is what keeps them consistent for years.

When small group training works best

Small group training (4–8 people at Stealth) runs one coached session plan, with each movement scaled to your level. It’s a great fit if you:

Keeping groups small matters. In a large class, a coach can’t watch your form closely. With eight or fewer people, a coach can still correct technique and adjust exercises for anyone who needs it.

Four questions to help you choose

  1. Do you have pain or an injury right now? Start with personal or semi-private training.
  2. How much do you know about lifting? If very little, a few private sessions first can speed everything up.
  3. What keeps you consistent? A coach expecting you, a small crew, or a full class? Pick the one you’ll actually show up for.
  4. What’s your budget per month? Training two or three times a week in a format you can afford beats one expensive session you skip.

You don’t have to pick forever

Many clients mix formats: one-on-one while they rebuild after an injury, then semi-private or small group once they’re moving well. Your needs change, and your training can change with them.
