If you have ever priced personal training in Phoenix, you know it adds up fast. Two or three sessions a week with a good coach can easily cost more than a car payment. Big group classes at most gyms are cheaper, but you get a workout written for 20 or 30 people, not for you, and nobody is really watching your form.
Semi-private training sits in the middle. It is the option most people have never heard of, and for a lot of adults it is the best value in fitness. You get the results of personal training, in a small group, with all the personalization of one-on-one. Here is how it works and how to tell if it is right for you.
What is semi-private training?
Semi-private training means you train with a coach and a small number of other people, usually 1 to 3 at a time. At Stealth Performance we never go above 4.
The big difference from a group class: everyone follows their own program. You are not doing the same workout as the person next to you. Your plan is written around your goals, your training history and any old injuries. You just share the coach and the session time.
Why you don’t need a coach for every rep
Think about a typical one-on-one hour. You do a set, then you rest for a minute or two. Then another set, then more rest. A good part of that hour, your trainer is standing there while you catch your breath.
Once you know your movements, you don’t need someone counting every rep. What you need is:
- A smart program that moves forward every week
- Someone who catches your form when it slips
- Someone who knows when to add weight and when to back off
- A set time and a coach who expects you there
In semi-private, your coach moves between you during your rest periods. While you rest, they are checking on the next person. When it is your turn, they are cueing your form, adjusting your weight and setting up your next set. You get the attention of a personal training session without paying for the minutes you spend resting.

Semi-private vs. personal training vs. group classes
| Personal training | Semi-private | Big-box group classes (other gyms) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| People per coach | 1 | 1–3 (never more than 4) | Often 20–30+ |
| Your own program | Yes | Yes | No |
| Form coaching | Every rep | Every set | When the coach can get to you |
| Works around injuries | Yes | Yes | Hard to do |
| Training partners | None | A small crew on the same path | A big class |
| Cost per session | Highest | Less than 1-on-1 | Lowest |
Who semi-private is best for
- Adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s who want to get stronger and move better without getting hurt
- People working around an old injury like a bad back, knee or shoulder, who need a plan built for them
- Anyone who has done personal training before and wants to keep the custom program without the full price
- People who did big group classes elsewhere and stalled because the workouts were random and nothing built on itself

It is usually not the best fit for someone who has never lifted before and needs a coach right next to them for every movement. In that case we often start with a few one-on-one sessions, then move into semi-private once the basics are solid.
What makes semi-private at Stealth different
A lot of gyms use the word “semi-private.” Here is what it actually means at Stealth Performance:
- 1 to 3 people per coach, never more than 4. That cap is real. It is what lets a coach see every set you do.
- Your program is written for you. Not a whiteboard workout. Your coach builds your plan from your goals, your training history and any old injuries, and updates it as you get stronger.
- One coach leads your program. You may train with different Stealth coaches depending on your schedule, but one coach owns your plan and every coach follows it. You are never just handed a random workout.
- Help outside the gym. Training on your own between sessions? We are happy to program your off days too, and you get nutrition guidelines to support your training.
- It starts with an assessment. Before your first program, a coach learns your story and watches how you move.
- Coaches who train pros. The same staff that works with NFL, NBA and MLB athletes coaches our semi-private clients. You get that level of programming whether you are 25 or 65.
- A crew, not just a coach. You train alongside a few people on the same journey. That support and accountability is a big reason people stick with it.
- Built up, not beaten down. We do not believe in leaving you wrecked for three days. Smart progression and good recovery keep you training for years, not weeks.
- Same time, same crew. You train at a set time each week with the same small group, which is the easiest way to stay consistent. If your schedule changes, you can switch times.
- Easy to try. New clients can try 4 weeks for $97. You leave your info, we find a time that fits, and you only pay once your time is set.
What a session looks like
You come in at your set time. Your coach already has your program for the day. You warm up, then work through your plan while your coach rotates between you and the 1 to 3 other people in your session. They check your setup, fix your form, adjust your weights and push you when it is time to push. Every few weeks your program is updated so you keep making progress.
Because you train at the same time each week with the same small crew, it is a lot easier to stay consistent. That consistency is what gets results.
What to look for in a semi-private program in Phoenix
- A real cap on group size. If “semi-private” means 8 or more people, it is really a class.
- Individual programs. Ask if everyone does the same workout. The answer should be no.
- An assessment to start. A good coach wants to know your history and see how you move before writing your plan.
- Progression. Your weights and exercises should change as you get stronger.
- Coaches you can talk to. You should feel comfortable telling them when something hurts.
Semi-private training FAQ
How many people are in a semi-private session?
Usually 1 to 3 people per coach. At Stealth we never go above 4.
Is it the same workout for everyone?
No. Everyone follows their own program. You just share the coach and the session time.
How is it different from personal training?
In 1-on-1 personal training the coach is with only you for the whole session. In semi-private the coach moves between a few people during rest periods, so you still get individual coaching and a custom program, with the energy of training alongside a few others, for less per session.
How is it different from small group training?
Small group training at Stealth is a coached group of 4 to 10 people following a shared progressive program. It is still small compared to most gyms. Semi-private is smaller again, and every person has their own program.
Is semi-private training good if I have an old injury?
Yes. It is one of the best fits for people working around a bad back, knee or shoulder, because your plan is built around it and your coach checks your form every set.
