Here’s the truth about getting older: we all lose muscle with age, and it starts earlier than most people think, somewhere in our 30s. The good news? Muscle doesn’t care how old you are. Give it a reason to get stronger and it will, at 40, 50, 60 and beyond.
So what actually matters once you hit 40? Here’s what we see every day at Stealth.
1. Show up consistently
You don’t need to live in the gym. Two or three good strength sessions a week, done for years, beats any crazy program you quit after a month. The best workout plan is the one you’ll actually stick with.
2. Keep getting a little stronger
Your body adapts to what you ask of it. If you lift the same weights forever, it has no reason to change. A good program adds a little at a time, a few more pounds, one more rep, an extra set, while keeping an eye on how your joints and energy are feeling.
3. Train to move well, not just to lift
Strength is great, but so is being quick on your feet. Things like catching yourself when you trip or popping up off the floor take power, and power fades fast if you don’t use it. That’s why we mix in things like med-ball throws, step-ups and fast, controlled lifts.
4. Work around old injuries, don’t hide from them
Most of us over 40 carry something: a cranky low back, a shoulder, a knee. That’s not a reason to stop lifting. It’s a reason to train with someone who knows how to adjust the exercise, the range of motion and the weight so you keep making progress without flare-ups.
5. You don’t have to beat yourself up to get better
There’s a lot of “no pain, no gain” out there, and plenty of gyms that crush you, leave you sore for days and send you on your way. That’s not how we work. At Stealth, the idea is to build you up, not beat you down. Smart programming, steady progress, good sleep and real recovery days are what actually make you stronger. You should leave most sessions feeling better than when you walked in.
What you can ignore
- “Lifting will make me bulky.” Building a lot of muscle takes years of focused work. Most people just end up firmer, stronger and moving better.
- “I’m too old to start.” We have members in their 60s who are stronger now than they were 10 years ago.
- “Cardio is enough.” Cardio is great for your heart, but it doesn’t replace strength training for your muscles and bones.
What this looks like at Stealth Performance
A lot of our members in their 40s, 50s and 60s train in semi-private sessions of 2–4 people. Everyone gets their own program built around their goals, their history and any old injuries, and a coach is right there making sure things feel good. Two or three sessions a week is the sweet spot for most people.
